Protecting employees, community top priority for Metropolis Works
Safety is the top priority for everyone at Honeywell’s Metropolis Works facility. We embrace safety as a personal responsibility and embed it into everything we do. We’re committed to strengthening and continuously improving our safety culture.
Honeywell operates under the principles of the American Chemistry Council’s Responsible Care® program, the foundation of health, safety and environmental excellence in our industry.
Metropolis Works operates “safely and securely” under a license from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. We are steadfastly committed to meeting – or exceeding – all NRC requirements.
We have well-defined safety programs that are focused on preventing safety problems before they occur. Our management team is actively involved in our safety effort and our leaders are constantly looking for additional ways to improve safety and engage employees in every aspect of the program. Employees receive extensive training when they join Honeywell and throughout their careers.
We take plant safety very seriously and we have invested heavily in recent years on plant improvements, including significant investments that are directly related to Health, Safety and the Environment. We’ve also strengthened our management team; formed a dedicated team to evaluate safety effectiveness and take corrective actions; implemented an integrated improvement plan; and taken many other actions to improve our performance and strengthen our safety culture.
We’re committed to providing employees with a safe and healthy workplace, and protecting employees, customers and everyone who visits our facility. Safety has always been an important part of our culture and it will not be compromised for any reason.
Our safety programs focus on preventing accidents and empowering employees to take responsibility for their own safety and the safety of their coworkers. The Metropolis Works management team takes a personal interest in safety and team members are deeply involved in our safety program. Every new employee receives an extensive safety orientation and regular training and communications on safety are an important part of our culture.
Our ultimate goal is to make sure no employee is ever hurt on the job. In 2009, our Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) incident rates were comparable to state and national benchmarks and we received independent Responsible Care® certification. But we can never be satisfied with our performance until we are operating with zero injuries, zero environmental incidents and zero regulatory non-compliances. We are working diligently to continuously improve Metropolis Works safety programs and practices, and we have taken a variety of actions to improve our performance and prevent accidents from happening.
Protecting the environment is a way of life for everyone at Honeywell’s Metropolis Works. We strive to foster a work culture where caring for the environment is every employee’s responsibility. We adhere to rigorous government and chemical-industry standards and guidelines, and we have developed an extensive environmental program that focuses on prevention.
Employees receive extensive training on our environmental programs, policies and practices when they join the company and throughout their Honeywell career. Management is committed and involved in our environmental programs. In recent years, we’ve developed a comprehensive Environmental Improvement Plan to guide our efforts and drive continuous improvement. We also maintain a Resource Conservation and Recovery facility, and we have implemented an enhanced waste-tracking process and improved our ability to report and track environmental concerns. As a result, we are able to respond quickly and effectively in the event of an environmental incident.
